Light Therapy

Light therapy, also known as heliotherapy or phototherapy has been used for thousands of years as a treatment for various ailments. Over the years, with significant technological innovations, this technique has evolved and artificial light is now being used to treat chronic pain, wound healing, brain injuries etc.

What is light therapy?

When your body is undergoing stress – in the form of pain, injury, illness or psychological stress – your cells have a tendency to produce nitric oxide in excess, which subsequently can stop the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), leading to cellular death, pain, inflammation etc. ATP is the compound responsible for transporting and providing energy to your cells, and is integral in the overall functioning of your body.

It is believed that LED light (specifically red light) has the ability to penetrate deep enough enabling your tissues to absorb the light, which in turn breaks down the excess nitric oxide and restores natural ATP production. Light therapy is also thought to augment blood circulation.

What are some of the health benefits of light therapy?

The joint effect of enhanced circulation coupled with the boost in energy from the ATP production not only reduces inflammation, but significantly increases the efficiency of your cells, resulting in the creation of healthier tissue. Light therapy is also considered very beneficial in treating:

Peripheral neuropathy

Chronic pain

Traumatic brain injuries and neurodegeneration

Wound healing

Headaches & Migraines etc.

Who is it for?

Light therapy has shown positive results in pain management, and can be used as a supplementary procedure for those looking to treat chronic pain, or brain injuries etc, as it stimulates the body’s natural healing apparatus. Pregnant women and those with sensitive skin should avoid this therapy.
