Electroacupuncture & Cupping

Both these therapies originate from traditional Chinese medicine which is centred on the belief that health is the result of an ordered balance between the complimentary extremes of yin and yang, constituents of the life force known as ‘qi’. ‘Qi’ is said to be the energy that flows through the body in meridians or pathways, and is crucial in maintaining health. Any imbalance in these forces results in illness.

What is Electroacupuncture?

Acupuncture refers to the practice of inserting needles into the ‘acupuncture points’ through which ‘qi’ is accessible, in order to restore balance to the vital energies. Electroacupuncture in turn refers to passing electric pulses through clips attached to these needles once they have been inserted, which stimulate a larger surface area, galvanizing the body’s innate ability to heal itself. It also prompts the body to produce chemicals that decrease or eliminate painful sensations.

At Minerva clinic we offer electroacupuncture, auriculotherapy and moxibustion.

What is Cupping?

In this treatment, cups are externally applied on the same focal points used in acupuncture and with the use of a rubber pump they create a vacuum that mobilizes blood flow to the area. Typically, the cups are made of glass, open from one end and rounded from the other. With the suction that is created, this therapy helps to soften tight muscles, loosen adhesions, and lift connective tissue. It brings hydration and blood flow to body tissues and drains excess fluids and toxins by opening lymphatic pathways.

At Minerva, we offer gliding, stationary, facial and magnetic cupping and guasha.

What are some of the health benefits of Electroacupuncture and Cupping?

Electroacupuncture and cupping have similar benefits in that they aim to relieve pain by mobilizing blood flow to the area, encouraging the body’s natural healing properties. Additionally they are used to combat:

Stress and fatigue

Chronic muscular or nerve pain

Tightened muscles

Insomnia

Weight loss

Addictions – smoking cessation

Menstrual irregularities

Hormonal imbalances

Constipation, gastritis

Anxiety etc.

Who is it for?

A combination of these treatments is extremely beneficial for those who seek pain relief. Anyone with a fear of needles can have acupressure and cupping. Cupping therapy should be avoided by people taking blood thinners, or people who have any bleeding disorders.
